Final Project Analysis

For this project, I did complete everything I was wanting to complete…but the challenges were many! Pretty much everything I had in mind of accomplishing took way more time than I had originally planned. My schedule was pushed back, revised, then revised again. The main challenge was creating everything in Illustrator, particularly  the tedious layering process, coloring, and managing to get the penguins to all look alike yet look like each band member at the same time. I think the T-shirts went the best, design wise and the posters the least strong. All together the process was such a huge step in learning how to design vector artwork with much more precision and with better quality. If I could do this project over I would definitely schedule everything out more, like give myself more time on each project. At the beginning of this project I was very confident I would have enough time to finish it all and still have time to make even more revisions on them, but towards the end I realized that time was limited and I needed to simply kick butt on it and finish strong. If I were to grade myself on this project, I would give myself an “A-” because I spent a great deal of time working on every part of this project, I learned a lot more about creating vector artwork, am even more comfortable working in Illustrator, but I do think that if I had more time I could have created each part of the project with even better quality. All in all I am very pleased with how this project turned out. It was truly a great process and learning experience and one of the funnest projects Iv’e worked on.

Here is my schedule, first revision and last revision:

Week 1 – Pick an idea for the project

Week 2 – Start thinking of the shirt designs and band logo – sketch out logo ideas

Week 3 – Finalize band logo – sketch t-shirt ideas

Week 4 – Scan shirt sketches onto computer – color in

Week 5 – Finish coloring shirt designs

Week 6 – Finalize shirt designs

Week 7 – Start thinking up poster designs – have sketches

Week 8 – Rough comps of posters

Week 9 – Refine designs

Week 10 – Finalize all graphics, Final designs due

This is the process of the Penguin t-shirt, the other shirts came from the already made designs.

Mid-term status

As of right now, I am refining one of my shirts designs and working on refining the other after I’m finished with the first. I should be Finalizing both of them but life caught up to me. I am about a week behind in my schedule as you can see below. I’ve decided that I am going to make 2 t-shirts and 2 posters instead of 3 each. (a more realistic approach)

Week 4 – Refine shirt designs

Week 5 – Finalize shirt designs

Revised Schedule for the rest of the term:

Week 5 – Finish refining shirt designs

Week 6 – Finalize shirt designs

Week 7 – Start thinking up gig poster designs – have sketches

Week 8 – Finalize band logo and have rough comps of posters

Week 9 – Refine designs

Week 10 – Finalize all graphics, Final designs due

Here is my first shirt design. Characters first shown individually, then all together. The final piece will have them all on an ice burg, I’m making that now, but here is what i have from this point…

This is my second shirt design. They said they’d really like a giraffe fighting a panda/koala. I just have to trace it and color it. This one wont take as long as the first shirt, it’s much simpler…

For the actual logo of the band this is what I came up with. I spoke with them and they said they love bright flashy colors, but something that doesn’t stray away from their music’s hardness. So after some sketching and talking to them, we agreed on this concept…

Revised Design:

This term so far has been really fun, but in the same time, very stressful. I love the work in all the classes but its hard keeping up. This class I have spent more time on work than I originally thought, which is why I have decided to change it from 3 shirts and 3 posters to 2 each. It’s much more realistic to get those done in time for the final due date. I see the rest of the term staying slightly the same pace as it is now, so what I have to do to stay on or ahead of schedule is to simple follow my schedule, prioritize my time and not procrastinate!

ASW logo

This is the logo I came up for the band All She Wrote. There a local pop/hardcore band. I spoke with them and they said they love bright flashy colors, but something that doesn’t stray away from their musics hardness. So after some sketching I got this…I was thinking I can change the line weights on different parts of it so that it looks more “naturally-made” than looking like it was just made in illustrator. Im still working on that now, but this is the start of the logo so far.
